National Education Minister, Nick Kuman, has said Papua New Guinea did not meet the Medium Term Development Goal 2015 in achieving universal primary education.
Mr Kuman says the state now anticipates an early achievement of the Medium Term Development by 2019.
Speaking on the O’Neill-Dion Government’s commitment to education during the Bougainville Education Act 2013 launching in Arawa, Central Bougainville, the National Education Minister said that in the last two years the National Government made a deliberate political commitment, making education free from elementary to secondary including technical and vocational training.
However, Mr Kuman said free education has to be complimented by quality curriculum, well-trained teachers and good .
The Minister has proposed to development partners, that internal revenue should make a target priority.
In the meantime, PNG is faced with a ‘bottleneck’ between primary and secondary education.
Primary school enrolments are increasing but secondary schools’ capacity is unfortunately not expanding at the same pace.
The flexible and distance learning option has the greatest potential for growth.
Kuman said it is important the post 2015 development plan agenda includes secondary education.
