Maprik’s SME Sector Sees Steady Growth

By Mickey Kavera – EM TV, Maprik

The small to medium enterprise (SME) sector in Maprik East Sepik Province has experienced steady growth over the years. Locals have seized the opportunity provided by the district administration and the national development bank to launch their own business ventures.

For starters, the district administration has assisted them with equity through the National Development Bank (NDB) credit scheme. Ten trucks presented under this scheme were distributed to various small entrepreneurs to help with their business.

Maprik MP John Simon called for consistency in repayment of the loan to the NDB. Chairman of the Maprik Businessmen Association, Yali Nongi, is concerned about the unequal distribution of wealth throughout the district created by an uneven power supply.

With the 500kva generator being installed, Mr Simon challenged PNG Power to extend its services to allow for everyone to participate in business opportunities. Controller of the PNG Power State of Emergency, Tom Ur, says Papua New Guinea is committed to delivering power to all areas of the district to create demand.

Maprik remains East Sepik’s leading district interms of economic activities. An estimated 500,000 kina circulates within the district, creating a perfect hub for business activities.

To maintain this, Mr Simon has asked commercial banks in the district to increase lending to maintain the cash flow to encourage growth of small businesses.
