BSP Kriket Program Bags International Awards

By Jeremy Mogi – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

Recently achieving the award of Best Overall Development Program in the ICC Regional (EAP), the BSP School Kriket program is set for another big year.

Sponsored by BSP and managed by Cricket PNG, the programme is by far the leading junior sports development program in Papua New Guinea, reaching out to thousands of children every year and bagging regional and international awards.

In 2014, the program reached more than 162,483 children, 10 regional centres, and staged 31 cricket carnivals and 108 competitions. The reach of 162,483 children is the second highest figure in the history of the program.

The BSP School Kriket program has been awarded the best Overall Development Program in the ICC Regional (EAP) Awards for four consecutive years since 2011; the year before that, it won the Best Junior Initiative ICC Regional (EAP) Award, and went on to win the same title at the Global Awards.

Plans are in place to reach 150,000 children this year, although considering its past success, this target may well be surpassed.

Cricket PNG Game Development Manager Gayan Loku announced these ambitious targets during the official launch of the 2015 season of the BSP School Kriket program today at June Valley Primary School in Port Moresby.

He attributed the success and growth of the program to hard work, commitment and stability of the Cricket PNG Administration and strong support from the bank.

BSP Corporate Sponsorship Manager Rosemary Mawe, who officiated at the launch, said the program is not only about extending the reach, developing and encouraging participation in cricket; it encourages children and communities to lead active, healthy lifestyles and instils values such as respect and teamwork.
