SP Hunters Prepare for 2016 Intrust Super Cup

by Jaylee Sapias – EM TV Sport, Port Moresby

Newly appointed PNG Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) CEO, Bob Cutmore, has announced that preparations for the 2016 Intrust Super Cup season are being finalized, as the SP Hunters prepare for pre-season training next week.

Cutmore said Coach, Michael Marum, had done a wonderful job during the 2015 season, and only slight changes would be made to a playing roster that had raised the standards of rugby league.

The SP Hunters, compared to the other 11 teams in the competition, travelled much longer distances throughout the season and this challenge was one that the team had to overcome.

Cutmore said the SP Hunters deserve far more credit than they received for their performance in 2015. He declined to give details on whether the Hunters would be losing any of their 2015 squad, explaining that the information would be released once all necessary arrangements were finalised.

In recent weeks however, the Hunters have come under public scrutiny due to the amount of financial assistance they had received, with many claiming that it did not correlate to a failure to reach the finals.

However, Cutmore stressed that while the SP Hunters had captivated the imagination of many, and lifted PNG rugby league’s profile at the international level, the game at the domestic level would get improved attention.

Meanwhile, coach Marum is set to announce his 2016 squad this week, which then assembles in Port Moresby for the November 24 pre-season start.
