After a successful 2015 season, members of the PNG Hunters have been given opportunities to trial and play with Rugby League clubs overseas.
These are positive signs that the Hunters program is developing local players, creating a pathway for them to play in higher level competitions.
Hunters forward, Katio Ottio, is in Australia trailing with the Canberra Raiders, and Warren Clare is bound for Cronulla Sharks for training and trial engagements.
‘Freight train’, Wille Minoga has been a consistent and valuable impact player off the bench for the Hunters. He is listed to play for the Townsville Blackhawks in 2016.
And there is also talk that Captain Israel Eliab may be bound for England.
These local players being presented with such opportunities, PNGRFL Chairman Sandis Tsaka said that this shows, “that we have raw talent here in the country and with avenues such as the Hunters and Kumul’s, provides a good platform to see our players have a shot at playing rugby league at the highest level.”
