Gerehu Water Woes Continue

By Eric Haurupma – EM TV News, Port Moresby

While Eda Ranu has been carrying out water disconnection and rationing around the city, residents of Gerehu Stage 7 and neighbouring Boreo and Veadihada villages of Central Provinces have been facing continued water shortages.

Residents say they are finding it more and more difficult to find good, clean running water.

EMTV arrived on the scene, as Gerehu Stage 7 residents and two Baruni villagers of Boreo and Veasidaha, voiced their disappointment with the challenges they had been faced with sourcing adequate water supply.

Women surrounded by empty water containers flock these areas with small children filtered in dirt, as these residents spoke of this ordeal they had been acquainted with over the years.

Gerehu residents said that since 2006 after stage 7 was recognised as a surburb of NCD, water shortages have plagued the suburb since then.

This follows soon after Eda Ranu disconnected the main tap supplying water to their homes. However, they claimed that even though they had negotiated with Eda Ranu upon payment of their bills there is still a delay in sourcing water.

Water is a priority needed in these areas, many children have been forced to skip classes and public servants have had to give up work due to lack of water supply running to their homes.

This situation is a continued predicament as many residents have had to carry plastic containers to source water in other areas in the city for cooking and drinking.

They claimed that they only now wash twice per week. Others said they have to preserve more water in containers and are greatly affected by the calamity of the prolonged dry season.

They are now calling on NCD Governor, Powes Parkop, and Member for Moresby North-West, Michael Malabag, to build a reservoir in their area that can supply them with water.

EMTV attempted to get responses from the authority concern Eda Ranu and Moresby North-West MP, Michael Malabag, but was unsuccessful.
