The United States 14th Coast Guard Commander, Rear Admiral Vincent Atkins, said sea ports security is vital for international trade.

Atkins said “security is everyone’s business”, encouraging port security officers to implement International Maritime Organisation’s best practice to avoid risks, including terrorism.

The Chief of the 14th US Coast Guards is on an official visit to Port Moresby.

He told maritime security officers who are undergoing an audit workshop to implement requirements of the International Ships and Port Facility (ISPS) code.

While over 75 per cent of trade takes place by sea, having well equipped port facilities, security personnel and inspectors is paramount.

Transport Department Secretary, Roy Mumu, said nearly all international sea ports in the country are ISPS compliant, including private ports like Basamuk.

Secretary Mumu says, so far the department has successfully implemented eight batches of maritime security training for maritime security guards, port facility security officers, maritime security risk assessment and security auditors.
