Polye: Use Public Health More

by Theckla Gunga – EM TV News, Port Moresby

The Opposition Leader, Don Polye, has challenged all members of parliament to use the public health system in the country.

Mr. Polye said he has placed his trust in Papua New Guinean doctors because they are among the best.

“These medical professionals are real heroes who continue to serve in both rural and urban health centres,” Polye said.

He made the challenge after he visited the Port Moresby General Hospital yesterday when he fell ill, and was diagnosed with malaria.

Polye’s visit surprised the medical staff and patients at the Port Moresby General Hospital, as they did not think someone of his status would go to a public health centre to get medical treatment.

Polye’s decision to visit a public hospital demonstrates his faith in medical professionals working in the public health sector.

“Like every other politician and leader of this country I am capable of seeking medical help at a private clinic or go overseas, but I chose to get treated in our hospital by our health professionals to send out a message that our health system and professionals can be trusted,” he said.

The Kandep MP said local health workers in the public sector have been involved in providing medical help for most Papua New Guineas across PNG.

Thus, they can be trusted in providing the same treatment to members of parliament and other high profile leaders.

Polye said as the Opposition Leader, he will continue to raise issues affecting the health system and the health professionals in the country.

The Kandep MP is now recovering at his home in Port Moresby.
