The number of children on the street has increased in Port Moresby, but little has been done to address it.
While the Government is now pushing forward bills to prioritise child protection, poverty continues to affect vulnerable children on the streets.
Life PNG Care director, Collin Pake, said the children on the streets are vulnerable and poverty is tackling them down.
In Port Moresby the figures cannot be confirmed but it is estimated that one per cent of those on streets are orphans who come from broken homes.
Currently, 22 homeless and vulnerable children are taken care of by Life PNG Care; an organisation that’s run by an ordinary public servant, Collin Pake and wife Frieda in Rainbow estate.
Collin said the children are the future of this country and needs to be loved and care for.
“I define our children as our future. Our nation’s future lies not on any other resources.
“The only valuable resource that our future lays are our children.
“We must value our children,” Collin said.
Community Development, Youth and Religion Secretary, Anna Solomon said, many of the policies are no match to current situations.
Currently few laws on disability and children’s protection are being recognised by Government but the challenge to implement them is still a long way ahead.
