Juffa: Reduce Tax

by Mickey Kavera – EM TV, Port Moresby

The current tax threshold of 35 per cent should be reduced to 20 per cent.

Northern Governor, Gary Juffa raised this in parliament today.

Juffa questioned Treasury Minister Patrick Pruaitch on why submissions from the Internal Revenue Commission (IRC) to reduce the threshold were not followed.

“I have met with executives of IRC and they told me a submission was presented to treasury to reduce the current 35 per cent threshold to 20 per cent,” Juffa says.

He says the current threshold is a burden to Papua New Guineans who are feeling the pinch of the high tax rate.

Juffa also wants the results of the tax review committee published.

“Why has it taken too long for the results to be published, Minister, can you assure the house that this will made available?” Juffa asked.

Treasury Minister Patrick Pruaitch says he is not aware of any submissions from IRC, but assured Juffa and the house a full report of the findings of the review soon.
