Treasury Minister and Member for Kandep Don Polye’said women must be empowered at all levels.
Mr Polye has challenged women folk inthe country to speak outtheir rights and come out against corruption. He said that only 40 percent of women are likely to be engaged in formal employment in comparison men. Mr Polye committed K100, 000 tothe Womenin Business Foundation to pursuetheir goals. This money which was allocated for the Womenin Business Microfinance Bank is an initiative to assist women take out loans to start businesses.
Papua New Guineaneedsthe input and advice of women to takethe country forward. To date, Mr Polye’s Triumph Heritage party has won’two seats in parliament- Sohe MP, Delilah Gore, and Eastern Highlands Governor, Julie Soso.
According to Gender Global Enterpreneurship and DevelopmentIndex published last week, it was stated that access to higher education formsthe foundation for high potential female enterpreneurship.
Another big challenge faced by employers is keeping female employees safe. Mr Polye’says this is unheard ofthe world over but exists in PNG an exercise that is costing businesses millions of kina. The government is not ignorant as it has moverd to address key areas. These include Education expenditure (up by 41 percent), Health expenditure, andthe Sorcery Laws(repealed).
