Extension of Grace Period not needed

Director oftheInstitute of National Affairs Paul Berker saysthe government has undermined itself by passingthe thirty month grace period bill.

He says any government doesn’t need an extension of time prover itself.

Mr Berker says parliament is not only made up of MP’sbut consists ofthe three arms of government.

It’s in this regard that he statesthe extended grace period to thirty months has reducedthe authority of parliament.

He says it’s surprising that a government with a majority feels insecure.

Mr Berker pointed saysthere are advantages tothe extension like political stability butthe economy would not be affected regardless.

From observation ofthe past ten years oPNG politics he says parliament is considered to be a rubber stamp tothe executive, they don’t really look atthe legislation very closely.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill argued thatthe extension was needed to implement government’services.

The opposition fired back, stating political stability should be earned.
