West Papuan Issue: Authorities Called to be Humane

President of Womenin Politics, Maria Hayes, has called on authorities to be humane intheir approach when dealing withthe West Papuan issue.

Ms Hayes was particularly frustrated atthe manner in which organisers ofthe Morning Star Flag Raising ceremony were arrested overthe weekend atthe City Hall.

She was accompanlied by Legal Advisor and formerLands Title Commissioner, Josepha Kiris.

Asthe matter was now beforethe courts, President Hayes didn’trsquo;t touch onthe legal aspect ofthe issue, but spoke aboutthe Sovereignty of a Nation and where constitution matters when it came to freedom of speech.

Ms Hayes sain PNG rsquo;sIndependence as a Sovereign Nation was given on a golden plate, whilethe West Papuans continue to fight for their self–determination.

She said Melanesian nations Vanuatu and Fiji have showntheir support for West Papua to be part ofthe Melanesian Spearhead Group, but failed to understand whPNG didn’trsquo;t give its support.

What’s also contradicting isthe fact thatthe Flag Raising Ceremony was approverd by NCD Governor Powes Parkop who isthe Chairman ofthe NCD Peace and Good Order Committee.

This meantthe ceremony was good to go andthe women are concerned that police intervention was uncalled for.
