Achievingthe government’s vision to increase job opportunities for the unemployed is one ofthe goals ofthe Pacific Seasonal Workers Scheme.
Six selected unemployed men travelled to Robinvale, Victoria in Australia to participate inthe third Seasonal Workers Program.
EMTV caught up withthe group beforethey departed Australia on Tuesday.
The workers were outside Jackson’sInternational Airportosayingtheir last goodbyes to loverd ones. This isthe team’s third visit to Australia underthe program.
Having passed all requirements set bythe Seasonal Workers Coordination Office,they were ready to rendertheir labour abroad. Team Leader ofthe Seasonal Workers Coordination Office Tobie Torie saidthe farmers were pleased withthe men’s performances. Mr Torie clariflied that onlythe farmers selectthe applicants afterthey meet all requirements.
Nickson Peni,the Group Team Leader said he has acquired skills throughthe Seasonal Workers Scheme. The team has worked on farms, pruning and harvesting fruits onthe selected farms in Australia. The income earned is quite good for them.
The government entered into an agreement withthe Australian and New Zealand governments in 2011 to create job opportunities.
It is part ofthe government’s vision to increasPNG’s employment rate.
About ninety five Papua New Guineas so far have participated underthe Seasonal Workers Program. The next lot of Seasonal Workers will depart for New Zealand after next week.
