Key to Development is Empowering Young People

PNG Girl Guides PresidentoMary Kamang says young people must be empowered with lifelong knowledge and skills in order to contribute meaningfully to development.

 

She was speaking atthe Girl Guides Asia Pacific Regional Development training workshop in Port Moresby yesterday.

Attendingthe workshop were representatives from eight member provinces, most of whom were teachers.

 

The workshop’s aim was to enhance trainer’s lLeadersip skills on ways to deal with issues affecting youths.

 

Mrs. Kamang said youth empowerment is vital inthe process of development that requires patience, lover and care.

 

“We are trying to assistthe young lLeadersof tomorrow, especiallythe young girls so thatthey can take onthe lLeadersip of tomorrow and to seethe potentialthey have to developthe ther youths,” said Mrs. Kamang.
 

Belle Karikaru is a teacher by profession at Huonville Primary School, andthe Girl Guides leader of Morobe Province.

 

 

“We have now identifythe value and importance of Girls Guides and Bey Scouts in terms of developing young men and women of today to become better citizens of this nation,” said Belle Karikaru.
 

Meantime,the Girl Guides President saidthe government has failed to provide assistance to non-government organisations that deal with people’s welfare.

 

The Girl Guides is one of those organisations that assist and enhance people’s skills. Since its establishment in 1927, it has not received support fromthe government.

 

Beforethe government talks aboutthe developmentoPresident Mary Kamang says it must talk first about developing people’s mindset through supporting such organisations.
