Director of National Agricultural researchInstitute (NARI), Dr. Raghunath Ghodake, says if Papua New Guineamakes an average of 4 billion a year, 400 million should be channeled to agriculture.
Whilethere is much talk aboutthe importance of agriculture,the country continues to achieve limited results.

Although 80 percent of Papua New Guineas still live a subsistence lifestyle using age old agricultural methods, not much focus has been given to this important sector. Its potential still remains largely untapped.
NARI is atthe forefront of agricultural research and development. It needs, however, more support in terms of participation by stakeholders includingthe government’so thatthe inventions developed by NARI can be used effectively by farmers.
While much ofthe focus has been onthe resource boom, NARI’s director general saysthere’s a risk thatthe importance ofthe renewable sector will be ignored.
