Protesting students’fromthe University of Goroka now wants Acting Education Minister Don Polye to receive a revised petition.
They saytheir first was rejected bythe University Council. The students’who are now on termbreakoycotted lectures againstthe administration.
Acting Minister for Higher Education Don Polye in a letter tothe University of Goroka Chancellor Benias Sabumei clearly instructed him to address student petition point by point with respective student lLeaders He also instructed him to amend UOG Act to include provincial group’s represented atthe Student Council among thers.
The students’saythe Council chaired by Chancellor Sabumei has deflied Minister Polye’s instructions. They have revisedthe petition and want Mr Polye to receive it personally on campus. Bet he is away on official trip. Ministry of Office of Higher Education Research Science and Technology are conducting an independent report onthe University Crisis. Fromthe report,the Minister will act accordingly.
Two weeks ago, students’expressed anger over whatthey described as a dictatorship university. A subsequent rampage led tothe destruction of university properties.
They also presented a petition tothe University Council but it was rejected. The petition called for Vice Chancellor Dr Gairo Onagi to step – aside and for Task Force Sweep to investigatethe University Administration for alleged misappropriation. Betthe university council said students’must provide evidence first before any procedure.
