Oil search andthe Port Moresby cancer relief society have gone tothe aid ofthe Port Moresby Oncology ward.
They donated K50, 000 worth of breast cancer drugs Tamoxifen. This comes afterthe Health department failed to issue needed drugs on time.
The Oncology Ward atthe Port Moresby General hospital provides a treatment environment that accommodatesthe needs of cancer patients, but it’s still under staffed and in need of vital cancer drugs.
Since December last yearthe ward has run out of Tamoxifen tablets. The health department is responsible for issuingthe drugs.
Fortunately K50, 000 worth of drugs were issued tothe oncology ward by Oil Search andthe Port Moresby Cancer Relief Society.
The six month worth of supplies will cater for the cancer wards untilthe department of health procures cancer drugs. A packet of Temoxifen costs K45.
Normallythe patients are prescribedthe tablets for three months. Each patient takes 20mg daily for five years.
According to recent statistics 1 new cancer case is reported every two days. Currentlythere are a total of 16 new cases and 38 old cases in Port Moresby alone.
Unfortunatelythe K50,000 worth of cancer drugs only caters for Port Moresby based breast cancer patients.
Free screening is held every Fridays at 8pm to 12pm.
