Street Children High in Resource Rich Country

A project called Children in Street Situation was launched on Thursday in Port Moresby, to assessthe number and circumstances leading to an increase in number of street children.

The exact number of street children in Papua New Guineais not established. And it is a shock for such a Resource Rich Country.

The CISS project began in July 2012. It aims to help improverthe behaviour of families and communities so that children can pursue better opportunities.

Research carrlied out bythe project officers reveal that parental neglect and separation contributed to children fending for themselves.

The research fellow revealed that many ofthe children engage in sex work and are onthe streets with no direction.

Research was carrlied out atthe Rabia Gini, Gorobe and 2mile communities where some street children identiflied were.

Project officers will work with families of more than eighty four thousand children to identify ways to improvertheir lives sotheir children do not have to be onthe streets.

Close to fifty per cent ofthem are boys who are below fifteen years old.

The three year project is supported bythe Community Development department and NCD Welfare.
