Namah Calls on OO’Neill to Relinquish Police Ministry

Opposition Leader Belden Namah has called on Prime Minister Peter O’Neill to immediately relinquishthe Police Ministry and appoint a permanent Police Minister.

Mr Namah’saidthPM’s decision to appoint himself asthe Police Minister was highly inappropriate and suspicious given a number of high profile investigations and cases.

“I’m calling onthe Prime Minister to immediately relinquishthe Police Ministry and make a permanent appointment of a new Police Minister,” said Mamah.

“The Prime Minister’s decision to appoint himself asthe police minister in addition to his role asthe prime minister is highly inappropriate and suspicious,” he added.

He saidthere was no plausible reason for the Mr O’Neill to continue hanging ontothe ministry unless he had ulterior motives.

He saidthe portfolio should be offloaded to anther sitting MP.

Prime Minister O’Neill took overthe Police Ministry following a Supreme Court decision upholding a petition nullifyingthe election of former Police Minister, Nixon Duban.

Mr Namah’said he was concerned overthe number of high profile investigations and cases, one of which includesthe payment of over K70 million to a major law firm, allegedly approverd bythe Prime Minister.

He welcomedthe announcement bythe Prime Minister of a thorough investigation.

However, he believes Mr O’Neill should distance himself fromthe police and Task Force Sweep.

“This cases needs to be independently investigated without involvingthe prime minister,” said Namah.

The Opposition has also called on Mr O’Neill to appoint a separate Education Minister.

Currently Minister for Finance James Marape is overseeingthe Education Ministry in an acting capacity.
