PNG has No Mine Tailing Law

The law reform commission says Papua New Guineahas no law onthe disposal of mine tailings except guidelines.

Since mining activities begun inthe 7s, only guidelines have been appllied to protectthe environment.

The workshop reviewedthe environmental and mining law relating to management and disposals.

Stakeholders were fromthe Government Departments of Environment and Conservation, Health, Mineral and Policy and Geo-Hazards Management including Mineral Resources Authority, Chamber of Mines and Petroleum and University of Papua New Guinea School of Science.

Constitutional and Law Reform Commission Secretary says a law will be enacted to regulate mining tailing activities.

Tambul/ Nebilyer MP and CLRC Chairman Benjamin Poponawa said government regulatory bodies involved in tailing management will produce a report andthen present tothe Justice Minister.

Five mining site selected for the consultation to begin are Porgera, Ok Tedi, Hidden Valley, Ramu Nico and Lihir.
