British Government ready to assist Fiji resume trade links

Minister for the United Kingdom’s Foreign & Commonwealth Office, Hugo Swire saysthe British Government is ready to assist Fiji and resume trade links should democracy be restored.

Beitain is one ofthe major importers of Fiji’sugar.

With trade increasing inthe region, Pacific Island states like Papua New Guineaand Fiji continue to be on high demand inthe global market.

And for Fiji,the British Government is keen onthe outcome of next year’s September elections. The British interest here is Sugar.Inthe new export cycle, over 120 thousand metric tonnes of sugar had been exported out of Fiji to London.

According tothe Fiji Beoadcasting Corporation, around 30 thousand tonnes of sugar was shipped to London inthe last week of April,the forth sugar export for the last crushing season.

And withthe sensitivity involved inthe anticipated elections,the British calls onthe Fiji government to honour its commitment.

Meanwhile, a communiqué was signed in Parliament yesterday between Prime Minister Peter O’Neil and his Fijian counterpart Commodore Frank Beinimarama.   

Among a host of bilateral commitmentsthPNG Government will provide K50 million to assist Fiji in its preparations for the elections.
