New Market for Telefomin District

The people of Telefomin District will soon have a new market to selltheir produce.

 

An existing market has a permanent shelter; however, sellers are forced to stand and selltheir produce and store goods all day asthere is no sitowhile thers preferthe outdoor to do business.

The wether at Telefomin is unpredictable and when it rains, those marketing outside get wet. Those who walk long hours withtheir agricultural produce to sell, only end up throwingthem away asthere are no proper storage facilities.

 

A local villager, Kepi Alungim said because it is difficult to transport fresh produce, most people are forced to carry only few vegetable bags wherethey sell to guest houses in Kiunga and Staff Mess in Tabubil throughthe daily charters provided by third Airline companies.

 

He is happy that those days are about to change withthe new market to be built soon.

 

The government through local MP Solan Mirisim has allocated K200, 000 to build a proper market.

 

It will benefitthe 40, 000 plus people inthe four LLG’s that comprise Telefomin, Namea, Oksapmin, and Yapsy.

 

Minister for National Planning Charles Abel presentedthe cheque of K200, 000 duringthe launch ofthe District Five Year Development Plan.

 

Also on that day, Minister Abel performedthe formalities to kick – start construction work on six staff houses for Staff at Telefomin Health Centre.

 

Work on both projects will commence soon.
