The Chairman of National Volunteers Services, Wep Kanawi, and wants government assistance of K10 million to train volunteers withthe help ofthPNG Defense force.
Mr Kanawi was speaking atthe National Volunteers day clean up at Igam barracks Lae, Morobe Province.
He saidthe whole concept of being a volunteer was to reach out and help thers. Currently,the volunteer service has people working in Agriculture, Health Extension and many ther areas.
Kanawi said withthe assistance fromthe military can give a huge advantage in terms of volunteers’ survival in remote places in PNG
Withthe help ofthPNG Defense Force in Lae,the NVS has been able to house and train volunteers beforethey are sent off to rural communities. However, infrastructure problems atthe barracks have been be a hurdle, due to years of government neglect.
“We are still helping NVS even with our infrastructure being in a state of disrepair,” said Areas Commander, Group Capt. Peter Aimos,
Aimos said thatthe volunteers have to be self-starters and like a soldiers nobody forcedthem into doing whatthey are doing.
Since its inception inthe early 199’s by former Wewak MP, Bernard Narokobi, NVS has been helping ordinary Papua New Guineas to reach out and help thers. They usetheir own skills and limited resources to do so.
Today, is National Volunteers Dayset bythe NEC and marksthe efforts of volunteers from 30 communities all around Papua New Guineawho go out to ther provinces to assisttheir own.
