Loujaya Kouza, said she holds no ill feelings against her fellow Morobean politicians who have opposed the proposed Lae City Commission.
She says, she is only doing her job as a representative for the Lae district.
“It's just that the information came out prematurely…I have no personal vested interest. I am the member for Lae. I have to protect the interests of my people”, Ms. Kouza said.
A recent visit to Lae by the Chief Secretary to the Government, Sir Manasupe Zurenuoc has settled the tussle, at least for a while.
He met with the members of the Morobe Provincial Executive Council.
The outcomes of the meeting haven’t been made available to the public yet, but its understood, the recommendations will come from the National Executive Council.
“I think the government, as a responsible government, thinks it’s about time to adequately fund Lae”, the Chief Secretary, Sir Manasupe said.
The recommendation that will come from the National Executive Council will determine the progress of the proposed City Commission.
While the reactions have remained political, the issue has trickled down to the people; each person with their own understanding of the issue.
“We only wait for the Morobean leaders to come up with a solution that is of benefit to us”, said a Local Level Councilor
Currently, the Lae City Council is an arm of the Provincial Government. It operates under the Provincial and Local Level Government laws.
The current arrangement doesn’t permit the City Council to collect adequate internal revenue from other businesses to take care of the city.
While the debate continues, many say, the Government should fund the existing Lae City Council, and not create a Lae City Commission.
