Basil: Help Needed For Displaced Ethnic Clash Victims

Bulolo MP, Sam Basil says support is needed from all levels of government to help address the backlog of ethnic clash victims in his district.

It comes after a series of ethnic clashes dating back to 2009 that displaced people living in Bulolo town.

“Ethnic clash victims should be treated like refugees from Manam by the government” he says.

Bulolo’s ethnic problems aren’t a new issue. It’s been long debated and responses are long overdue.

Mr. Basil, says the district administration needs more support from the Provincial and National government.

He said funding alone won’t help solve the problem. The Provincial government must give technical support with the funding.

“We need both the money and the help of officers,” he says.

It comes after three thousand Bulolo-Sepik’s spoke of their struggles whilst living in a campsite for the last four years.

Poor sanitation including the need of clean portable water are just some of the problems that the Sepik people at the camp site live in.

A family is living under the district library whilst others have moved behind it to escape poor sanitation.

Whilst the district administration calls for support, the people will live in squalid conditions until resource and funding is available.
