Continuous rain in the Southern Highlands Province has caused catastrophic damage to parts of the province that require immediate attention.
Southern Highlands Governor, William Powi, today announced an initial funding of K500, 000 to deal with critical issues at hand.
Heavy and continuous rainfall in the last two weeks has done considerable damage in the province.
Landslips and heavy flooding from the rain has resulted in roads being cut off and food gardens and livestock either washed away or covered in the landslips.
The Southern Highlands Provincial government today announced an emergency funding of K500, 000 for urgent repair and assessment work to start.
The first work at hand is to provide some form of access to people whose roads and bridges have been affected.
Governor Powi said he has already had discussions with the Works Department and the Prime Minister and people should take stock of the level of damages while the provincial administration visits districts during the week to assess and report on the damage.
He is concerned that if the rain continuous in the coming days and weeks, more damages will be done to the province.
However he said the provincial government is mobilising its resources to attend to immediate needs while waiting for the National government’s response.
In the meantime, no casualties have been reported yet but roads linking the multi million kina LNG project have also been cut off in the landslides and need immediate repair work.
