New Ireland Provincial Day

With constant influence from the modern world, preserving cultural practices and identity are important.

This was the message echoed by those who spoke during the New Ireland Provincial Day, celebrated at Murray Barracks in Port Moresby.

Organised by the UPNG New Ireland Students Association, the day saw different performances from the province.

It’s also good news that K10, 000, has been set aside for every province to celebrate their provincial day in the city.

City residents from New Ireland and those with special connections with the province, flocked the Murray Barracks field to be part of the celebrations at the New Ireland Provincial Day.

Those who attended included NCD Governor, Powes Parkop, and State Enterprise Minister and Kavieng MP, Ben Micah.

With the theme, Innovative Integral Development through Cultural Unity, New Ireland Provincial Day is celebrated annually, to emphasise on the importance of preserving cultural practises, especially the need to instill respect for elders and those in authority.

Also there in his traditional attire to celebrate the day was the Member for Namatanai, Byron Chan, who participated in the cultural performances.

New Ireland Province promotes the Council of Elders and impleMen’s pension for elders, a concept that sets the province apart from the rest of Papua New Guinea.

It’s such practices that are needed to be promoted and the New Ireland Provincial Day provides the avenue.

It has the backing from NCD Governor, Powes Parkop, who contributed K10, 000, to host the Provincial Day.

Both MP’s from New Ireland Province, Micah and Chan contributed K10, 000, and K5, 000, respectively towards the day.

Apart from this, the Office of the Governor for NCD has committed K10, 000, for each of the provinces to celebrate their provincial days in the city every year.
