Five Mile Settlement Keen On Change

The five mile settlement in Port Moresby is set on changing the perception of people in the city as being a notorious area.

The community has been conducting a clean-up along the Hubert Murray Highway in an attempt to keep their part of the city clean, and to make awareness for other settleMen’s in the city to join in the change.

The community service has been going on for almost a month and community representative, Simon Nicodemus says this will be an ongoing activity.

He said the community came together to not only change the way people think about the settlement, but to also join in keeping the city clean.

The cleanup is conducted every weekend and the community is now calling on NCDC to help assist with bags, gloves and rubbish bins.

Community members are looking at changing the settlement, making it a model for other settleMen’s in the city to follow suit.

Members of the community say they want a contract to be given to them by NCDC to keep the area clean, and to help remove the rubbish piled in a heap on the side of the road as it has become a health hazard and unsafe for vehicles and pedestrians.
