“Remembrance Day Lae” – Edwin Fidelis         

 

It’s been nearly 70 years since the end of the Second World War, but the memories of fallen heroes still lingers on. At Lae’s Igam Barracks, soldiers gathered at 5am this morning to commemorate Remembrance Day. Representatives of the Australian Defense Force and members of the other disciplinary forces took part in this morning’s event.

 

The main highlight of the event was the presentation of the “Scroll of Honour, which contained the biographies of the PNG soldiers killed during the Bougainville crisis.

This was followed by the laying of wrath to remember soldiers and local Papua New Guineans, who were rendered as War Time Heroes, killed during World War Two’s battle of the Pacific.


 

“Government Assistance” – Ruth Rungula

 

While the national government has announced a further funding of 5 million kina to assist flood affected provinces of Gulf and Southern Highlands, no money has reached Southern Highlands Province yet.

 

The disaster team there is working from the 200 thousand kina from the disaster office and says, the money is running out.

 

While they expect the provincial government’s assistance of half a million kina to reach them this week, no money from the National government has been transacted down to the province as yet. The National government’s commitment to these two provinces now stands at ten million kina.


“Strike Looming” – Ruth Rungula

More than a thousand rural nurses in Southern Highlands Province have given the Health Department until the end of this week to pay them the Nurses Award or they will walk off their jobs.

 

They did not receive theirs when this award was paid to nurses a couple of years back.

 

They blamed their Human Resource representative in the province for the failure in them being left out of this payment, and want it to be paid, or they will go on a strike for an indefinite period.


“Clinton Meet Hulis” – Tokana Hassavi

 

Papua New Guinea’s uniqueness can capture the attention of powerful individuals.

Two Huli dancers, Jeffrey Olara and Paul Dabuma, who are part of the Oil Search team at the International Aids Conference were pleasantly surprised to meet former US President, Bill Clinton.

 

The former US President delivered the keynote address before greeting people on his way out, when the unique Huli traditional attire caught his attention.


“Chemica Coffee” – Bernadette Efi

 

Chemica limited will be the sole distributor of McKinnon Indian coffee processing machinery in the country. McKinnon India is a wholesaler and exporter of Wet and Dry Processing Systems, and Laboratory Equipment. It is a joint venture of the world-renowned McKinnon and Co. of Aberdeen, Scotland established in 1840.

 

They offer a large range of the machinery, designed and manufactured to handle all the process requireMen’s of coffee. Sales and Marketing Manager Bob Wilson said the products are well known for their quality, durability, high performance, efficiency and precision.

 

Chemica has a history of working with the coffee industry and welcomes this new initiative as a way of providing quality machinery which will, in turn, bring quality results at very economical prices.


“Para- athletes at Glasgow” – Tere Alex

 

Six Para athletes on Team PNG include three power lifters and three athletics competing in track and field. Upon their arrival, they joined weightlifting coach Lakani Oala and Fred Oala and made a familiarization visit to Clyde Auditorium.

 

They could not inspect the actual competition venue but were able to take a quick glance at the athletes lounge. The officials and athletes are happy and looking forward to their competition on 2nd August while the Athletics team will be competing on 28th July at the Glasgow City Marathon Course, Hamden Park.
