The Pacific Games Council says progress for the 16th Pacific Games, which will be hosted by Tonga, is underway towards delivering a successful event, although plenty still needs to be done.

A number of existing venues need upgrading including the Teufaiva Park in Nuku’alofa, which will be hosting the main ceremonies and sports such as athletics and rugby.

An indoor hall which was built in 1989 for the Mini Games is still being used but is also due for refurbishment.

Meanwhile Queen Salote Memorial Hall, has been approved by sporting officials to host five other sports.

Andrew Minogue, Executive Director of the Pacific Games Council, says they remain positive Tonga can deliver on schedule.

“A lot of venues still need to be built. The Chinese government has entered an agreement with Tongan government to redevelop Tonga High School and that will give us a range of sporting facilities there as well.”

Minogue says there are also a number of others schools in Nuku’alofa that are in walking distance of venues that can be converted and used as the athletes village.
