A handcraft seller at Lae’s top town crafts’ market has questioned the ban placed on street vending in Lae city.
It comes following the recent Lae protest on street vending which has driven the provincial government to implement bans through Lae City Council.
The entrepreneur, who earns an income through selling handcrafts, has questioned whether the ban applies to her small handcraft business.
Rana Kamano, a mother of four, has lived in Lae for the past 30 years.
She makes a living from weaving and selling bilums, baskets and bilum-wear.
Following Lae’s protest against street vendors, Rana is now worried over the operation of her markets.
She is concerned whether the ban placed on Lae street vending also applied to her small handcrafts business.
In November, Lae experienced a period of tension over street selling of goods in the heart of the city.
Some of the handcraft sellers at Lae’s top town area have sought approval from the Lae city council to do their business, but are still unsure if this will last in the future.
Last month, Lae city Council imposed a ban on the sale of items along the streets of Lae, however registered sellers are still not sure whether to continue conducting their activities.
