PNG to Host World Cups

by Raphaella Kaore – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

Minister for Sports, Justin Tkatchenko, has told EMTV Sports that the country is well and truly ready to host the 2016 and 2017 international events that are set to hit the shores of Papua New Guinea.

Tkatchenko said the government has its full support to make these events possible by making sure all facilities will be delivered on time.

After winning the bid for both the FIFA Under 20 Women’s Football World Cup and the 2017 Rugby League World Cup, the Minister for Sports has reassured stakeholders that PNG is ready host these two major events.

These events follow on from the success of the 2015 Pacific Games. He said that PNG is ready to prove to the world that it is capable of hosting such events, as well as hosting other big international events within the Pacific region.

These events will give PNG the opportunity to bid for other sporting events to take place in Papua New Guinea. The 2017 Rugby World Cup will take place in October 2017, after the Women’s Football World Cup.
