Callan Celebrates International Disability Day

By Louisah Frank – EM TV News, Port Moresby

The Callan Special Education Resource Centre, located in Gerehu at the nation’s capital, commemorated International Disability Day today.

Today’s theme,“Inclusion Matters! Access and empowerment for people of all abilities,” places an emphasis on this special group of people, who should have access to any services which are available to able bodied persons.

Callan Special Education Resource Centre, in Gerehu, is one of 23 centres which have been helping many people living with disabilities in the country.

The centre teaches children how to communicate, and prepare them to continue into main stream schools to further their education.

Program Coordinator of CSERC Gerehu, Maryanne Sabatan, said there are many challenges which hinder them from delivering service to the less fortunate.

Inclusive education is the inclusion of the disabilities into main stream schools.

Over the years, less priority has been given to inclusive education in PNG.

The Department of Education’s Inclusive Director, Dr. John Pokana, said the department has plans to improve inclusive education in the country.

Mrs. Sabaton thanked the Gerehu Stage Six community for their support, and appealed to the general public and stakeholders to contribute to the centre in any way possible.
