Hekari On Top

by Jeremy Mogi – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

With a two from two winning streak, Hekari have scored eight goals so far through two rounds of the Telikom National Soccer League, as they look towards topping the southern conference for yet another year.

The pre-tournament favourites have so far deposed of Gigira Laitepo and PKA Rapatona, with defender-cum-striker, Koriak Upaiga, leading the score tally for the club.

And while Hekari have yet to lose an opening match day fixture, the 4-2 scoreline against Gigira reflected that much more work still needed to be done.  Following up on that match, was last weekend’s meet up with PKA Rapatona.

Hekari held to a 1-0 scoreline in the first half, after Leo Moli placed them in front after 30 mins.  And while Rapatona did manage to create chances of their own, Hekari were able to contain their opponents.

A brace by Koriak Upaiga, and a fourth by Barry Mansale proved their supremacy.

With Upaiga upfront, Hekari appear to have solved earlier teething problems, especially considering the current absences of Tutizama Tanito and Tommy Semmy, who were instrumental in their campaign in the previous season, scoring 16 goals in the process.

Hekari will also be looking at a win this coming weekend, where they will be facing Erema Gulf United, who defeated Huawei PS 4-2.

They’ll be up against familiar faces in the likes of Tau Winnie and Leana Geno, both of whom have had stints with the club, but that aside, there is no doubting Hekari’s quality at the moment, even though it is still early in the season.
