Poultry Meat Ban Effective

By Fabian Hakalits – EMTV Port Moresby

The National Government’s position on banning imported Australia’s uncooked poultry meat remains effective.

Agriculture and Livestock Minister, Tommy Tomscoll, when responding to the question raised by Talasea MP, Francis Marus, told parliament that the ban aims to grow Papua New Guinea’s economy and benefit farmers to recapitalise and expand the poultry industry.

Minister Tomscoll said priorities of the poultry industry sector are on farmers. The PNG’s Poultry Industry generates K712 million annually, much higher than Australia’s K100 million.

The ban imposed on April 5th, protects the bio-security of poultry industry, national economy and human health of Papua New Guineas.

Minister Tomscall said it is important not to entertain or provide market for farmers in other countries.

The Government has commissioned a review into the Bio-Security Act and Bio Security of the poultry industry in Papua New Guinea.
