Women in Sport

The International Olympic Committee has identified sport as a tool for achieving gender equity and addressing other gender based issues in modern society.

Since the establishment of the Women and Sport Commission, the IOC has seen a steady increase in the participation of women in Olympics.

While the productivity between the IOC and National Olympic Committees have become crucial in achieving gender equality, the IOC have now included the media, as part of their strategic plan.

Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee Women and Sport commission, Lolwa Ali Al-Marri, says, “discussion and cooperation is the way forward for achieving gender equality. It is through the approach of sports, that progress can be made towards achieving equality.”

However, this is not to diminish men, and promote women.

Communications expert, Ameyo Mawusse Anifrani says, it is important we take the point of view from human rights, as it is about fostering cooperation through men and women.

The Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee stands alone in the Oceania, with the highest rate of women participation and involvement, in executive positions.

Statistics have shown, the involvement of women has increased, and contributed to the success of team PNG over the years.

In 2011, 57 per cent of team PNG’s medals at the New Caledonia Pacific Games were achieved by women, and since then the ratio sits comfortably with just under half of the overall contingent, made up of females.

The Women in Sport Commission, a sub commission of the PNG Olympic Committee will adopt strategies and programs from the IOC to ensure the sustainability of women’s participation in sport.
