Australia Supports PNG Aviation To Achieve International Aviation Standard

by Bridgette Komatep – EM TV, Port Moresby

With the upcoming APEC Summit in 2018, Papua New Guinea needs to comply with international aviation standards.

With support from the Australian government through an Agency Support Arrangement between PNG’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority and the Australian High Commission, work is underway to achieving these standards.

The instruments to formalise the arrangements were signed by all stakeholders at the CASA headquarters in Port Moresby, this afternoon.

Following the signing ceremony, work can now progress to improve Papua New Guinea’s aviation industry.

Minister responsible, Steven Davies, said it has taken eight months to furnish the arrangement, one he says will help CASA move closer to improve compliance standards.

The arrangement aims to enforce safety and security standards for the regulator, in this case, the Civil Aviation Authority.

Training will also be provided for staff and industry professionals, with hopes to achieve and maintain high standards of compliance with special interest in aviation security and safety requirements for 2018 APEC.

At the cost of K8 million, activities under the arrangement will be delivered through the PNG – Australian Transport Sector Support Program, Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority and Strongim Gavman Program.

The development assistance will continue over the next four years from 2015 to 2019.
