Civil Registry Distributes NID Cards and Birth Certificates

By Vasinatta Yama – EM TV, Port Moresby

Civil Registry started distributing the National Identity Cards and Birth Certificates today.

A total of five hundred NCD residents are the first to receive their ID Cards and Birth Certificates.

Registrar General of Civil Registry, Dickson Kiragi, also announced that the Birth Certificate and the ID card are the only legal documents in the country.

Planning and Monitoring Minister, Charles Abel, issued the NID Cards and the Birth Certificate to first four recipients inside the Civil Registry Office, while others stormed the office waiting impatiently to get theirs.

The Birth Certificate comes free with the NID Cards, and the ID Cards and are valid for 10 years, however, if damaged or lost, a minimum fee of K200 will apply to get a new one.

Minister Abel said they are working on the clock to fasten the registration and processing of every new applicant, so that their Cards and Certificates can be completed within five days and be given to them.

So far, the Civil Registry has registered and processed 3,222 applicants in their database.

Mr Kiragi said they are closely monitoring the registration and the updating of their data.

Yesterday, eight hundred and ten NCD residents went to register at the civil registry. They have two shifts that are working day and night to fasten the process.

They will utilise these two legal documents to prevent identity theft when accessing government services. The four Regional Centres will be the next to register.

The NID Project Unit and its partners and stakeholders will train people who are already on the ground, in each Provinces to carry out the registration processes throughout the country.
