Cricket PNG has once again, been recognised internationally, claiming the Best Overall Cricket Development Programme award, in the Pepsi ICC Development Programme Annual Awards for 2014.
PNG had a phenomenal year in 2014, with the Barramundi’s achieving One Day International status, and the Lewa’s making it into their first ever ICC Women’s World T20 qualifier.
Due to their expansive cricket development programs, such as the Gold Nugget Kriket Blast, and the BSP School Kriket Program, there are now over 200,000 cricket participants in PNG.
Game Development Manager, Gayan Loku, said while Cricket PNG has reached a climax with their development programs, there are plans to exceed expectations, and continue to grow the Game.
“We want to put together a pathway giving opportunities to everyone across the country to participate in Cricket,” Gayan said.
Gayan confirmed that through Cricket PNG’s development program, the opportunities to play cricket and represent Papua New Guinea have extended to more boys and girls, within schools throughout Papua New Guinea.
He said, “in previous years, we would rely too much on the natural talent, we know Papua New Guinea has, but now, we have a structured program to identify players and develop them over the years.”
