After 30 years of no access to water sources, residents of the 6 Mile suburb in Port Moresby, now have water.
Over 8 water taps were commissioned by Moresby South MP, Justin Tkatchenko, and Eda Ranu Chief Executive Officer, Henry Mokono, recently.
Communities there have been walking for miles to fetch water for cooking, drinking and other household needs. Moresby South MP, Justin Tkatchenko, said the project comes with open dialogue between landowner Sima Saraga, and service provider Eda Ranu.
Tkatchenko said people living in these communities must appreciate and take ownership of the water projects.
“Children must not play around with the water taps; its costly and time consuming to establish such service to places like settlements,” he said.
MP Tkatchenko says such services come at a cost and residents will dig into their pockets with the subsidised arrangement with service provider Eda Ranu.
Water projects in the Moresby South electorate cost almost half a million kina, and MP Tkatchenko says more areas will be looked into, along with the building of markets and police stations.
Eda Ranu Chief Executive Officer, Henry Mokono, urged Ragamuga residents to take pride in the project and work with their water committee to sustain this project.
Principal landowner, Sima Saraga, says his heart to see the community access water has allowed Eda Ranu and MP, Justin Tkatchenko, to provide this service.
