Residents in Port Moresby’s Gerehu Stage 1, raised questions to NCD Governor Powes Parkop, and Member for Moresby North West Michael Malabag, over a sale of land.
Formally the land has been their recreational park in the past 30 years and has been used for games, meetings and other programs.
This will not be the scene anymore, as a developer bought the piece of land for half a million kina.
Residents were angered after the developer scraped off the pathway, cut down trees and pushed aside the monkey bars.
A long-time resident Pala Kilagi expressed disappointment over the sale of land and demanded answers from relevant authorities.
She says Governor Powes Parkop should have consulted the residents or make known that the potion of land will be on sale and be developed.
A youth spokesperson said despite presenting a petition to NCD authorities, no attention or respond was given back to the residents.
The youth Justin Tatamasi said, the youths are shocked by the actions taken by the new landlord.
He said since the park has been removed and destroyed, the children and youths were left out to seek new alternate playing spots.
Meanwhile developer Thomas Talu showed EMTV documents of obtaining the potion of land.
He said he has followed proper procedures to acquire the land and develop a property.
However NCD Governor Powes Parkop denied the approval of NCD in the sale of the land and says the Lands Department must have not zoned the area as recreational but as residential and a land title was up for sale.
He said to solve this matter and address the affected residents of Gerehu Stage 1.
