Lae Residents Want More Fire Stations

Lae residents have called on the National Government to build more fire stations in the industrial hub after a series of fires destroyed several buildings in the first two months of this year.

The residents say with the extension of the wharf and other projects developing around the city, more has to be done to improve the Lae Fire Service.

Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru, is expected to mention this in parliament when it resumes this week.

Lae residents have demanded that the National Government build new fire stations to cater for the city’s needs and expansion.

“Lae Ports is making billions of kina for the nation building the sooner we improve the fire station we will maintain our economic capacity,” Yeking Tengan is prominent elder in the Lae Community. He has raised the concern that fires are becoming a threat.

His voice stands clear along with several others which have come after a series of fires; nine so far, counting from as early as last year.

The most recent was the Pelgen’s fire that destroyed two more buildings several weeks ago. That fire had drawn attention back to the struggling Lae Fire Service.

Lae residents have backed the Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru, who has asked the National Government to allocate money to build more fire stations.

Governor Naru asked for assistance in the form of one hundred million kina to build two new fire stations.

Governor Naru is also expected to mention this on the floor of parliament as parliament resumes this week.
