Police will be discharged from monitoring and regulating the sale and consumption of betel nut in the Nation’s Capital and Central Province.
Police Minister, Nixon Duban said police are not legally bound to be engaged in such arrangements.
He said he will look further into this case, with assistance from the Police Commissioner.
This follows concerns raised by the Central Province Governor Kila Haoda, on policemen continuously harassing villagers along the Hiritano Highway who come into Port Moresby to sell their produce.
Governor Haoda was not happy when he raised concerns about policemen and City Rangers harassing villagers along the Hiritano Highway.
The Governor said he had received reports about police men attacking villagers who come into the city to sell their betel nut.
He also raised concerns about police involvement in the monitoring and regulating of betel nut, between the Central Province and Port Moresby.
Police Minister Nixon Duban sympathized with the Governor and said he would look into the matter with assistance from the Police Commissioner.
He said he is also confused about the police involvement in the monitoring and regulating of betel nut between Central Province and Port Moresby.
The Minister said police should rather be engaged in national operations and not minor arrangements as such.
The Minister said ill police actions have embarrassed him and the Constabulary, and he urged the Governor to officially write to his office and the Commissioner’s office as well.
