The measles outbreak in Port Moresby is now under control.
The outbreak was declared, after a seven-year-old child was diagnosed with the disease, last week at the Port Moresby General Hospital.
Quick emergency responses from the NCD Health Services, with the Health Department’s support, have helped to contain the disease.
NCD Health Services Director, Dr Niko Wutai, said authorities are on the lookout for further cases, and are working under an action plan.
Investigations are continuing into how the child contracted the disease.
Today, medical teams were in Waigani, conducting anti-measles immunization programs.
Mothers in the area brought their children to receive treatment at the respective clinical sites.
It was a happy moment for some children. While for others, it was the same as a painful mosquito bite.
So far, so good; and NDoH’s Public Health Surveillance and Emergency Response, Program Manager, Berry Ropa says no new cases were recorded as of today.
The immunization program will continue this week in Waigani.
All health facilities will administer the measles vaccine, and report any suspected cases.
