Kase on Recruiting Overseas Doctors

More health workers will be needed to effectively roll out the Government’s Free Primary Health Care Policy.

The policy is effective as of today, but the Health Department has identified manpower as a problem, and plans to recruit doctors abroad.

When announcing the implementation of the Free Primary Health Care Policy last Friday, Health Secretary, Pascoe Kase said manpower will be an obstacle in many hospitals and Health Centres.

Despite this, Secretary Kase urges all health workers to be punctual at duties, while the department looks to recruit doctors overseas.

In support of the policy, Mr Kase said the infant and maternal mortality rate in PNG is very high, and this policy will help to minimize it.

He said facilities at labour wards and delivery of babies will be free, and he urged more mothers to visit health centers for labour.

Meanwhile, the Government’s Free Primary Health Care Policy is effective as of today, and anyone seeking basic medical treatment in a public hospital; Health Centre or Aid Post will not be charged.
