Ballast Water Management Convention Launched

A two day workshop on the Ballast Water Management (BMW) Convention was launched today at the Lamana Hotel in Port Moresby.

This is a government and industrial partnership program between the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP).

The workshop is aimed at assisting the process of endorsing and implementing the BWM Convention in developing countries.

This workshop is one way of assisting organizations in the shipping industry to apply and implement the BWM Convention.

This is significant for Papua New Guinea with the passing of the 5 Marine Pollution Bills in 2013, which also includes the BWM Convention.

The two day workshop brought together 12 private and government organizations that will help in implementing the BWM Convention in the country.

Anthony Talouli, Pollution Adviser of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme, said the workshop will provide organizations in the industry with insight as to the procedures and effects of ballast water in the marine environment.

Ballast water is often taken on board a ship to give it stability and ensures propeller and rudder operation.

This water is later released in the destination port once the ship is docked and can contain harmful organisms.

To ensure that these harmful organisms do not harm the marine environment, the workshop is aimed at the compliance, monitoring and enforcement of the ballast water management convention.
