PNG hopes for More Spoils in Summer Karate Championships

Part of the PNG Karate-Do Federation Train-On squad left for Brisbane yesterday for Queensland Summer Karate Championships which kicked off today.

The tournament will be held at Logan Metro Indoor Sports Stadium. 

The last time PNG took part in the event was last year where the team won 2 gold medals, 1 silver and 2 bronze. 

The team hopes to emulate last year’s performance.

After the tournament the team will train at the Shotokan Karate Budokai Honbu in Camira in Queensland, under PNG Karate mentor coach, Sensei Trevor Roberts from 23rd – 25th March 2014.

Sensei Kelly Roberts, daughter of Sensei Trevor who is a former Australian representative and former Queensland coach will take charge of the PNG women athletes at the tournament. 

The team is as follows;

  1. Violet Wangihau; NCD, competes in 61kg Kumite
  2. Sarah Ande; NCD, competes in, 61kg Kumite, individual kata and mixed team kata
  3. Crystal Mari; NCD, competes in Cadet (14-15 years) Kumite and Cadet individual kata
  4. Joancherry Revui; NCD, competes Junior (16-17 years) 59kg kumite, individual Kata, Open Kata and mixed team kata 
  5. Gantianna Joseph; NCD, competes Junior (16-17 years) 59kg kumite, individual Kata, Open Kata and mixed team kata
  6. Peace Kaiwa; WNB, competes in +69kg kumite
  7. Leonard R Gariad; iNCD, competes Seniors 75 kumite and individual Kata,
  8. Cosmas W Saliawali; NCD, competes Seniors 60kg kumite, individual Kata, and mixed team kata
  9. Owen R Gigiro; NCD, competes Seniors 60kg kumite,and individual Kata
  10. Siwari Matus; Morobe,competes Seniors 75kg kumite,and individual Kata
  11. John N Tarapia; Morobe, competes Seniors 75kg kumite
  12. Timothy Alovare; Eastern Highlands, competes Seniors 67kg kumite and individual kata
  13. Willie Leslie; Coach
     

The team will return on Wednesday 26th March 2014.
