Telikom: 400 Employees vs. Board Chairman

More than four hundred Telikom PNG employees have raised questions about the roles and responsibilities of Telikom PNG Board chairman, Mahesh Patel.

The workers, through the PNG Communication Workers Union, accused the Chairman of his direct involvement in making management decisions.

However, Telikom’s Board Chairman, Mahesh Patel, today dismissed these accusations explaining his actions.

In an interview on Monday, the General Secretary of PNG Workers Union, Emmanuel Kairu, raised several concerns of the four hundred registered members.

The union questioned the micromanagement of the company and the current recruitment process.

The Union claims the board chairman is by-passing the office of the CEO.

The Chairman of the Telikom Board said this action is for him to better understand the company, in order to fix the disciplinary and mismanagement issues within the company.

Mr. Patel says in order to achieve the fundamental aim of delivering service to the customer, there are so many functions of the company that have deteriorated, and need fixing. He said his direct involvement is the way to fix the problems at Telikom.

Telikom PNG’s Divisional Manager Human Resource dismissed claims about the influx of expatriates in the company.

The Union is calling on the Prime Minister, Peter O‘Neill, and State Enterprise Minister, Ben Micah, to replace the Board Chairman in order to address these concerns.

However, Mr. Patel says the board is focused on delivering in 2014.
