Manus: Lorengau Market to be Renovated

The Australian Government and Manus Provincial Government are inviting key stakeholders in Manus to have their say on the renovation of the Lorengau Market roof.

They are inviting the stakeholders to sit down with Provincial Technical Services Division who is contracted to renovate the markets roof and come up with a design for the roof, and agreed to the scope and timing of the reservations.

In a media statement sent by Australian High Commission, the High Commissioner Ms Deborah Stokes, when visiting the province recently, inspected the market and said the market will be renovated for the Manus people and it will be a market Manusians can be proud of.

The renovations will be fully funded by the Australian government under its Asylum Seekers deal, and will be constructed by the Provincial Technical Services Division in close consultation with stakeholders in Manus to ensure that the design meets their requirements.

After stakeholder’s approval of the concept design, an architect will prepare a detailed design of the roof, which is expected to be built of metal.

Construction is expected to commence in July and completed by December. The Local Level Government (LLG) has already demolished a dangerous, collapsed section of the roof.

The market was built in the 1970’s by the LLG and is a hive of activities for the people of Manus.
